California Road crossed here. Gold seekers first traveled it in the rush for California in spring 1849 under military escort commanded by Captain R.B. Marcy, going west from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Antelope Hills, 8 miles northwest, was once a landmark for the international line of the U.S. and Mexico. On Little Robe Creek, northwest of the hills, is the site of a Comanche battle with Texas Rangers under Captain John S. Ford in 1858.
