The Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail was built in 1885 and remained in continuous use as a jail until 1969. The Park Board acquired it in 1971 for preservation. The United States Government named it to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The Historical Society of Pottawattamie County purchased it on January 15, 1979.
