On August 19, 1859, Abraham Lincoln visited Council Bluffs and from this point viewed the extensive panorama of the Valley of the Missouri River. In compliance with the laws of Congress on November 7, 1863, he selected this city as the eastern terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad.
