Elverhøj Museum of History and Art in Solvang, California, preserves the town’s history, Danish culture, and the arts in a building that is itself part of that heritage. Built in 1950 as the home of artist Viggo Brandt-Erichsen and painter and teacher Martha Mott, it was modeled on large eighteenth-century Jutland farmhouses and features strong Scandinavian design elements. Donated to the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society, the house was renovated in 1987 and opened as a museum in May 1988. Its name and distinctive carved redwood door connect it to a Danish folk play long performed in Solvang, while its collections and rooms preserve Danish-American traditions and local history.
