West Chop Light stands at the northern tip of West Chop in Tisbury, Massachusetts, marking the entrance to Vineyard Haven Harbor. First built in 1817, the station repeatedly had to be moved because the sea eroded the bluff, and the present 45-foot brick lighthouse dates to 1891. Its early history is closely associated with Captain James Shaw West, the first keeper, who served from 1818 to 1848 and oversaw important changes including new lamps and the 1846 rebuilding. Automated in 1976, it was the last lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard to do so. Still active, it reflects the island’s long maritime heritage.
