Nobska Light
Woods Hole, Massachusetts
Transportation
Nobska Light stands in Woods Hole at the southwestern tip of Cape Cod, overlooking the meeting of Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound, and Vineyard Sound at an important maritime crossroads. Established in 1828, the station took much of its present form in 1876 with the construction of its iron lighthouse, rebuilt keeper’s quarters, and oil house. The tower is distinctive for its brick interior and iron exterior, with Italianate details and a ten-sided lantern. In the 20th century the station added a radiobeacon tower, adopted new fog-signal technology, passed from the U.S. Lighthouse Service to the Coast Guard, and was automated in 1985. It remains a prominent historic coastal landmark.
