Hills and Dales Estate in LaGrange, Georgia, combines the 1916 home of textile leader Fuller Earle Callaway and Ida Cason Callaway with the much older Ferrell Gardens, begun in 1832 and expanded by Sarah Coleman Ferrell into a formal, symbolically designed landscape known as The Terraces. After buying the property in 1912, Callaway hired architect Neel Reid to create a Mediterranean-influenced house that fit the established gardens, linking home and landscape with added fountains and statuary. The estate later passed through the Callaway family to the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation and became a museum, opening publicly in 2004 after renovation.
