In a brick-walled enclosure one hundred feet east are buried seventy-six Confederate and Federal soldiers who were killed or died of wounds in the siege of Fort Tyler. The engagement took place on April 16, 1865, a full week after General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Only nineteen of the graves are marked with names or initials. In the northeast corner are buried General R. C. Tyler and Captain Gonzales, who were killed while commanding the Confederate forces defending Fort Tyler against great odds.
