In Ukiah, California, Grace Hudson and her husband John returned from work in Oklahoma Territory and created the Sun House in 1911 as a redwood Craftsman-style bungalow marked by a Hopi sun symbol they adopted as a personal emblem. They lived there simply, blending travel, collecting, field work, reading, entertaining, photography, and painting. John died there in 1936 and Grace in 1937. With no children, Grace left the house and land to her nephew, Mark Carpenter, who preserved the home and its 30,000-object collection before giving it to the city. The site now forms part of Hudson-Carpenter Park, and Grace Hudson’s art is recognized for sympathetic portrayals of Native peoples.
