Hendy Woods State Park preserves one of Anderson Valley’s most important old-growth redwood landscapes, combining inland redwood forest, camping, and the valley’s only public access to the Navarro River. Its Big Hendy and Little Hendy groves contain towering coast redwoods, some more than 300 feet tall and possibly nearly 1,000 years old. The area was home to Pomo people long before Russian traders and later timber interests entered the region. Joshua Hendy’s family protected the groves from logging, and local activists, especially the Anderson Valley Unity Club, helped secure state acquisition in 1958. Dedicated in 1963 and later expanded, the park remains a vital natural and public refuge.
