A cannonball weighing 1,080 pounds and measuring 22 inches in diameter was retrieved from the hillside opposite a Civil War proving ground in the area between Trafford and Pitcairn, near Mosside Boulevard, after it had been fired there during a Civil War test. Richard Custer and his son-in-law, John O. George, recovered it and placed it at the family homestead, a log cabin in Cavittsville, in the early 1890's. In 1902, John O. George and his wife, Mary Custer George, daughter of Richard Custer, built a new home on the hilltop of Cavittsville on Cavittsville Road, and the cannonball was moved by a team of horses and placed on a cement pedestal in front of the house.
