Augusta National Golf Club
Pop Culture
Augusta National Golf Club, founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, opened in 1932 on the former Fruitland nursery and plantation in Augusta, Georgia. Designed by Jones with Alister MacKenzie and assistance from Marion Hollins, it struggled at first as the Great Depression and Augusta’s remoteness limited membership. The Masters began in 1934 to bring attention and financial stability, and the club later grew into one of the most admired courses in the United States. Its history includes wartime closure and restoration, postwar expansion, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s close association, storm damage and rebuilding, and longstanding controversy over its exclusivity and privacy.
