At Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial stands near the Battle of Lake Erie site as both a monument to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s 1813 victory and a symbol of the enduring peace among Britain, Canada, and the United States. Its 352-foot Doric column, built from 1912 to 1915, is the tallest of its kind in the world. Beneath the rotunda, six officers from both sides of the battle are buried together. Later made part of the National Park System, it uniquely links the memory of wartime sacrifice with international peace, arbitration, and the demilitarization of the Great Lakes.
