During the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, six British Royal Navy ships sailed to fight U.S. ships at Put-in-Bay in an effort to regain control of lake supply routes. With 19 guns, HMS Detroit fought the larger U.S. brig Lawrence and was left severely damaged. By the end of September 10, 1813, outgunned and undermanned, British Commander Robert Heriot Barclay surrendered in a disastrous British defeat. HMS Detroit was a Royal George class ship-rigged sloop-of-war with a displacement of 305 tons, a length of 92 feet 6 inches, a beam of 26 feet, a draft of 12 feet, a complement of 150 men, and an armament that included carronades, a pivot cannon, and nine-pounder cannons.
