On May 4, 1859, William Lee, a member of the Simpson Expedition, wrote that the party set out at seven A. M., marched 16 ½ miles, and camped at Pleasant, or Simpson's, Spring, where there was a mail station, reaching camp about one o'clock on the eastern rim of the Great American Desert.
