The Central Overland Trail at Dugway Pass crossed nearly southwest across the desert to Short Cut Pass. Through this pass, Chorpenning and Company, the mail contractors, made a road, but Captain James H. Simpson wrote on May 5, 1859, that it was so crooked and steep that it scarcely permitted their wagons to get up it.
