In the 1970s, where the mountains reach the river, Metz Field was simply a field until Wayne Handley built a runway, a hangar, a chemical loading facility, and a mobile home office in 1973 to start Crop Flight, an aerial crop dusting service. The runway, built from DG with a small patch of asphalt in the middle, later became an aerobatic competition training center where many of the world's best aerobatic pilots landed, took off, and trained. Its two notable approaches, "Canyon One" from the north and "Tunnel One" from the south, made it an unusual place to land and fly. In 2005, Don Chapin took over from Wayne, and the field became known as DCFIA. Metz Field is also the only place in Monterey County where four forms of transportation meet: runway, railroad, roadway, and river.
