Mission San Antonio de Padua was founded by Father Junipero Serra on July 14, 1774, in a most picturesque setting. Its first mass was celebrated in the presence of one Indian. Later, the congregation grew to a thousand neophytes. It became famous for its fine horses and expert vaqueros.
