On June 20, 1898, a plot of 400 acres around the summit of Mount Greylock was established as the first State Reservation wilderness park, to be enjoyed and preserved by the people of Massachusetts. Those 400 acres were only the beginning of what would become the vast Massachusetts State Forest and Parks system, dedicated to the conservation of public land for all to enjoy.
