The War Memorial Tower is Massachusetts’ official commemoration of its war dead. Dedicated in 1933, it is made from slabs of Quincy granite weighing as much as 8 tons, and its epigrams are from First World War-era poets. Extreme weather conditions at the summit have led to many restoration efforts, and in 1974 the state entirely rebuilt the tower. An earlier Greylock tower was a weather observatory erected by Williams College students in 1831, and those students also built a second version in 1840. In 1885, visitors paid 10 cents to climb a third tower built of iron. By 1932, the tower that still stands was nearly complete and awaiting its globe-shaped beacon.
