Founded in 1843 and named for President Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson was the chief river port of Texas from 1846 to 1870. This prosperous ante-bellum city became a Confederate quartermaster depot and produced boots, shoes, iron goods, and preserved meats for the army. A nearby oil field was discovered in 1939, and the city has many fine old homes and other landmarks.
