Excelsior House is the oldest hotel in East Texas. Its frame section was built in the 1850s, and a brick wing was added in 1864. During Jefferson's river port days, its famous guests included Presidents Grant and Hayes and the poet Oscar Wilde. It was restored from 1961 to 1963 by the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club.
