Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, south of Columbia, Missouri, preserves a karst landscape of caves, sinkholes, an underground stream, and the natural rock bridge formed by a collapsed cave. Its best-known feature, Devil’s Icebox, is accessible by trail and boardwalk along with Connor’s Cave. The area also has a long human history: in the 1800s its stream powered a gristmill, the first paper mill west of the Mississippi River was established there in 1834, and a distillery followed in 1847, supporting the small community of Rockbridge Mills or Pierpont. Opened as a state park in 1967, it also serves as a memorial and recreation area.
