Camp Swigert was a Union Civil War training camp organized on December 12, 1861, covering 20 to 25 acres and serving as a center for volunteer enlistees under the command of Col. D.W. Lindsey. Recruits from surrounding counties, Frankfort, and Louisville were assigned there to form the 22nd Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, and both black and white infantrymen were stationed at the camp. The regiment later engaged in skirmishes in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, followed by service at Middle Creek, Kentucky, and Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, then moved through Tennessee and Mississippi. In March 1864 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the 22nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment was consolidated into the 7th Kentucky Veteran Infantry, and the non-veterans were mustered out in Louisville on January 20, 1865.
