Herb Monroe and his wife Millie moved from central Ohio to Paulding in 1941 when he became manager of the Paulding-Putnam Rural Electric Cooperative. Though they expected to remain in northwest Ohio only a few years, they raised their family in Paulding and spent the rest of their lives there, until Millie died in 1997 at age 81 and Herb in 2011 at age 98. During his 37 years as manager of Paulding-Putnam, Herb was a pioneer in bringing electricity to many farm families in the area. Known as a friend to all, he kept a cheerful disposition despite hardships, lived with Christian humility, humor, and a servant's heart, took part in many local activities with commitment and joy, and was remembered for recalling people's names and details. Saying, "I am too blessed to be distressed!" he became the friendly face of Paulding for 70 years and was remembered for his loyalty to the village and its people.
