Built on this site in 1889, Forder Bridge was named for local landowner George Forder, who built its stone abutment and pier, while Milwaukee Bridge and Iron Works built its steel truss. The bridge was 356 feet long, 24 feet high, and stood 28 feet above the Maumee River. It was a Pratt Through Truss, with “Pratt” referring to the arrangement of the diagonals and “through” referring to the overhead steel bracing that allowed travelers to drive through the bridge rather than over it. It was one of the first Pratt Through Trusses built in Ohio with steel instead of iron. When it was removed in 1995, it was the oldest steel Pratt Through Truss in Ohio, having served the traveling public for 106 years. Its abutments and pier were made of laid-up stone without any mortar in the joints.
