Near Piney Creek off Worley Road in Beckley, West Virginia, this archaeological site marks the location of a mill founded in 1835 by Alfred Beckley, the city’s founder and namesake. The mill continued operating into the early 20th century before closing and being abandoned. For years, its remains were shielded from vandalism by the site’s isolation, caused by nearby railroad tracks and a local landfill. The area has since become a small public park, and the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
