The design for the fifty star flag originated at Lancaster High School in 1958 when student Robert Heft created it for a history class project. Anticipating Alaska's admission as a state and Hawaii's expected statehood, Heft made a fifty star flag from an old 48-star flag by replacing the field with blue cloth and using white adhesive for the stars. After Heft received a B- on the project, his teacher, Stanley Pratt, promised to raise the grade if Heft submitted the design to their congressman, Walter Moeller. Moeller sent the design to the chairman of the Congressional Flag Design Committee, who approved it, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower made it the official American flag in 1960. It became the only flag in American history to fly over the White House for more than five administrations.
