Grayson Glades Natural Area Preserve
Nature
Grayson Glades Natural Area Preserve is a fifty-three-acre protected area in Virginia centered on an extremely rare wetland known as a mafic fen. Formed on magnesium-rich soils and fed by springs, these fens sit at the headwaters of a small stream system that also supports more of the same habitat. The preserve is especially important for its uncommon wetland plant life, including tuberous grass-pink, ten-angled pipewort, large-leaved grass-of-parnassus, queen-of-the-prairie, sticky false-asphodel, and Canada burnet. Owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the preserve has no public-access improvements, so visits must be arranged in advance with a state land steward.
