An Outdoor Pantry
History

The Brinegars stored much of the food they raised in this building. The upper level was the granary, where dried corn and buckwheat were kept and herbs were hung to dry. After hogs were butchered, the meat was cured in salt and kept here in the meat box. The lower level was the root cellar, and because it was dug into the ground, it kept fruits, vegetables, and canned goods from freezing. Martin and Caroline stored potatoes, cabbage, onions, apples, and other produce harvested from their garden and orchard here.
