Clyde Sands and Mamie Thrift represented rural life in Baker County on the peaceful farmland of the Clyde Sands compound, where rich and fertile fields, abundant fruit trees including peach, pear, orange, lemon, kumquat, and fig, and loose-running hens and guineas gave the place the charm of a bygone era. After the 1969 death of Clyde Sands's first wife, Thyra McDuffie, he married Mamie Thrift, the couple's widowed wash lady, at Thyra's request. Clyde was born on the 496 acre farm his grandpa had bought for $600 by growing cotton to pay for it, and Clyde paid his pa $16,000 for the land in 1937. He and Thyra reared two sons on the land, and he and Mamie, friends since childhood, worked the land and cultivated the crops until Clyde's health failed. In 2005 the land was cared for by Clyde's two sons, Clyde-Dell and Ferman (Kay), and the old homestead lived on.
