Mount Tuscarora, in Allegany State Park at Coldspring in New York’s Southern Tier, rises 2,144 feet above sea level and is the park’s highest trail-accessible summit. Known as South Hill from 1890 to 1965, it stood between the settlements of Quaker Bridge, or Tunesassa, and Wolf Run. Its most notable landmark is a 60-foot steel fire lookout tower built in 1928 by the Conservation Department’s Division of State Parks as part of Allegany’s fire detection network. Although many state park towers were transferred to Forest Fire Control in 1931, Allegany retained control of this one, which still stands despite needing serious restoration.
