Summit Fire Tower is a 60-foot steel fire lookout tower on South Mountain in the Allegany State Park area south of Salamanca in western New York. Built in 1926 by the Allegany State Park Commission, it formed part of the region’s early forest-fire detection system and by 1928 was one of five towers operating in the park. Responsibility for its lookout operations passed to the Bureau of Forest Fire Control in 1931. Its original function declined as aerial detection became more common, and lookout service ended after the 1970 season. Restored in 2006 and reopened that October, it remains open with the park as a preserved link to New York’s forest-protection history.
