Samuel VanderMeer came from New Jersey in 1923 and became known as “Uncle Sam” to generations of Kentucky youngsters. In 1927 he became pastor of the Morris Fork Presbyterian Church, the same year he married nurse Nola Pease. As missionaries and community builders, Sam and Nola gave this area a total of 98 years of service and love until retirement in 1968.
