Butler County was named in 1810 for Gen. Richard Butler, born in Ireland in 1743. He came to America in 1760, served as an officer during the Revolutionary War, became an Indian agent in 1784, and was superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Northern District in 1785. With Geo. Rogers Clark he negotiated an Indian treaty in 1786. As a major general and second in command, he was killed on St. Clair's expedition against Indians into the Ohio country in 1791. Butler County was formed out of Logan and Ohio counties.
