The Great Western Trail
Transportation
10
The Great Western Trail, the largest and longest of the cattle routes and the one used for the most years, is often called by the Hollywood-famous name of its cousin, the Chisholm Trail. The two trails ran parallel to each other about 90 miles apart, but the Chisholm Trail did not pass through the Vernon area. Seven million head of cattle and horses moved up the Great Western Trail from 1874 to 1893, with its major years from 1874 to 1886.
