Old Spanish Treasure Cave in northwest Arkansas is a karst maze cave whose branching rooms and tunnels set it apart from many single-route tour caves. Open to visitors since at least 1908, it has long been a tourist attraction offering guided tours and other activities. Its strongest identity, however, comes from enduring Ozark treasure legends. Stories variously link the cave to Spaniards, conquistadors, bandits, and later treasure hunters, with accounts of hidden bullion, old maps, excavations, and searches that continued into 1918. Whether treated as folklore or mystery, these tales gave the cave its present name and much of its lasting appeal as both a natural site and regional legend.
