Planning for replacement of the County Road 510 Bridge over the Dead River began in 1999 after Michigan approved critical bridge funding, but the project was delayed by right-of-way acquisition, alternative road alignments, emergency work after the Silver Lake Flood, permitting, and difficulty obtaining soil borings. The work was divided into two phases. In the first phase, bid in 2007, Oberstar, Inc. and sub-contractor Zenith Tech installed a three-sided culvert at a tributary crossing, carried out major earth excavation, and completed grading and the first asphalt course on the approaches by November 2008. A switchback road on the north side of the river was then built to allow soil borings needed by Wilcox Professional Services to finalize bridge plans. In the second phase, bid in 2009, Lunda Construction Company began work on the abutments and center piers, with footings, columns, caps, and abutments assembled and poured by November 2009. After winter delay, girders were assembled in 2010, the deck was reinforced and poured in phases, then sleeper slabs and approach slabs completed the concrete work. After painting and final asphalt, the new bridge opened to traffic on September 17, 2010, and work then continued to close the old steel truss bridge to vehicles. The completed bridge was 532 feet long, 36.52 feet wide, 100 feet above the water, and had three spans, with a total construction cost of $6,658,665.82.
