On October 5th, 1864, Federal cavalry under Colonel John Fonda of the 118th Illinois Cavalry came from Baton Rouge, passed through Clinton and other points west of Camp Moore, then went north near Osyka before attacking the camp from the north. Only a few dozen troops remained there by that time, and they scattered under the attack. The Federals overran Camp Moore and destroyed everything of value, including a tannery, large quantities of gray cloth and clothing, other quartermaster stores, and captured the garrison flag. The camp was raided again on November 30th, 1864, under General John Davidson, and all buildings were destroyed. After that, Camp Moore effectively ceased to exist.
