Whitefish Dunes State Park

Whitefish Dunes State Park on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula preserves the largest sand dunes on Lake Michigan’s western shore, a landscape continually reshaped by wind, waves, and shifting sand. It is also a major archaeological site: the Whitefish Dunes-Bay View Site contains remains of eight successive prehistoric Native American villages, with evidence of settlement from about 100 B.C. into the later 1800s, including North Bay, Heins Creek, Late Woodland, and Oneota occupations. In the early 1800s the lakeshore also supported fishing camps as maritime trade grew. Alongside its cultural record, the park protects fossils, an esker, rare plants, and active dune habitats.
