From 1954 to 1958, the State of Michigan built the Mackinac Bridge under Governor G. Mennen Williams and the Mackinac Bridge Authority, chaired by Prentiss M. Brown, with members Charles T. Fisher, Jr., George A. Osborn, Mead L. Bricker, Murray D. Van Wagoner, William J. Cochran, Fred M. Zeder, and Charles M. Ziegler, along with State Highway Commissioners Charles M. Ziegler from 1950 to 1957 and John C. Mackie from 1957 onward, Executive Secretary Lawrence A. Rubin, Treasurer Sanford A. Brown, Consulting Engineer D. B. Steinman, Consultant Glenn B. Woodruff, and principal contractors Merritt-Chapman and Scott Corporation and American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel Corporation. It also honors the courageous members of organized labor who lost their lives in the hazardous fight against the elements during the bridge's construction: Albert B. Abbott, Jack C. Baker, Robert Koppen, James R. LeSarge, and Frank Pepper.
