Built about 1788 from here southwest to the Clinch River, Emory Road became a route along which many early settlements and institutions were established. Haley's Station, a pioneer fort, stood 3 miles east on Richland Creek, and the Mouth-of-Richland Baptist Church was established here in 1788.
