In the early 19th century, the South Jersey iron furnace at Weymouth produced iron from bog ore mined in surrounding swamps and brought to the furnace by small barges poled along canals. It made iron castings, stoves, pots, and pans, and cast cannon and ball for the War of 1812 as well as the first iron pipe for the City of Philadelphia. A paper mill was erected here shortly after the furnace closed in 1862, and all operations ceased about 1887.
