Burglund Elementary and High School, a school for Black students at the corner of Saint Augustine and Elmwood Streets, was built in 1937. Mr. Commodore Dewey Higgins served as principal from 1937 to 1958, and Mrs. Georgia Westbrook was the first female principal. From fall 1956 through May 1958, some black students attended school at Westbrook Elementary School on Martin Luther King Drive, where Craft Funeral Home is now located, with Mrs. Helen Hood as principal. A new Burglund Junior High and High School on North Elmwood was built in 1958, and the school at Saint Augustine and Elmwood was later named Westbrook Elementary in honor of Mrs. Georgia Westbrook. The school served grades 1 through 6.
