Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park in Napa Valley preserves an 1846 water-powered grist mill established by Dr. Edward Turner Bale on the Rancho Carne Humana land grant. One of only two water-driven mills still standing west of the Mississippi River, it served both as a working industrial site and a gathering place for early settlers, grinding wheat and corn into flour and meal until 1879. Built with practical frontier methods and powered by water from Mill Creek, the mill was later restored through local preservation efforts. Today the partially restored mill, its 36-foot water wheel, nearby church site, and Pioneer Cemetery remain protected.
