After 1861 this area was an Indian reservation until it was opened for settlement in 1905. Homesteaders arrived, cleared land, dug ditches, planted crops, and built cabins. A home erected by David Richardson and moved here became the first post office, with Rhoda Barker as postmistress. A bell adornment hung in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building erected on this site, which was also used for recreation and school, where William Neal was the first teacher. Lake Fork was renamed Upalco.
