Ashley National Forest spans northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming across mountains, rivers, lakes, and high country shaped by the Uinta Mountains, the Green River, and Flaming Gorge. Its human history reaches from Native American hunting and petroglyphs to Spanish entry in 1776, William Henry Ashley’s 1825 exploration, and cattle settlement in the 1870s. Established in 1908, the forest later expanded and includes much of the High Uintas Wilderness, the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, and the Ashley Karst National Recreation and Geologic Area. Known for Kings Peak, abundant wildlife, and extensive trails and water recreation, it remains a major public landscape in the region.
