Ferromonte was the home of iron mine proprietor Mahlon Dickerson, who served as New Jersey Governor, U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy from 1834 to 1838, and a delegate to the New Jersey Constitutional Convention in 1844, and who favored national tariffs to protect American industry.
