Built in 1956 in Jackson’s Elraine Subdivision, the Medgar and Myrlie Evers home became both a family residence and a crucial civil rights site. Medgar and Myrlie Evers chose the ranch-style house partly for safety, yet in 1963 it became the scene of escalating racial violence: a Molotov cocktail was thrown onto the carport in May, and Medgar Evers was fatally shot there in June after returning from a civil rights meeting. The bullet hole remains inside the house. Preserved and later restored to its appearance during the Evers family’s years there, the home endures as a powerful Mississippi place tied directly to the civil rights movement and a pivotal national tragedy.
