Cape Neddick Light
Cape Neddick, Maine
Transportation
Cape Neddick Light, widely known as Nubble Light, stands on Nubble Island just offshore from York Beach, Maine, and has become one of New England’s most recognized coastal landmarks. Planned as early as 1837, it was funded in 1874 and built in 1879 as an active aid to navigation. Its brick-lined, cast-iron tower was designed to withstand harsh Atlantic conditions, and its light sits high above sea level on the rocky islet. Noted for retaining its Fresnel lens, the station is also remembered for stories of isolated keepers, early tourism, and modernization through electrification in 1938. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
